Fg Off Dundas proved to be the first taxiway victim. Moving out of dispersal in L1096 he got mixed up with a lorry transporting ground crews. The rear of the lorry was dented and so was the leading edge of the port wing! Neither was considered unserviceable, the fitters got to work, and the damage made good. 609 was the only operational Squadron left at Northolt, as 111 Sqn had gone to Debden to refit, 600 Sqn was reforming after losing all of its B Flight and 92 Sqn had suffered badly including their OC, Sqn Ldr Roger Bushell, an Auxiliary. Bushell had been shot down, believed killed, but was a POW and numerous attempted escapes later found himself at Stalag Luft III at Sagan in 1943 where he led The Great Escape as ‘Big X’, losing his life in the process.
